Instead of paying rent, buy a condo for your college student child to live in until graduation. Then sell the condo.

For students who do not wish to live in dormitories, renting an off-campus house or apartment can be expensive. Today students often take five years to earn their undergraduate degrees and longer to get graduate, professional or advanced degrees.

Multiple years of student rent money often times would be better applied to buying an inexpensive condo that, once your child finishes school, you could sell or turn into a rental property.

When you buy a condo for your dependant child, you can take the mortgage rent as a deduction from your taxable income. If you buy a condo and then sell it once your child finishes school, your after-tax housing expense for your child is likely to be less than if you paid rent for all those years.

If your child is going to school in San Diego, to see if buying a Bayview Tower condo at auction would be cheaper than paying rent for off-campus housing, make the comparison with a rent-versus-buy calculator.
