Checklist: What is important to you? How satisfied are you with how your portfolio is being managed currently?

Managing an investment portfolio has many aspects. Your relationship with your portfolio manager has many dimensions. As you think through what you are looking for in a portfolio manager, you may find it useful to complete and print the checklist below.

When you interview prospective portfolio managers, you may want to use the checklist as an agenda for your conversation.
 

Understands your goals, situation and personality
Knowledgeable about global economy and dynamics of financial markets
Advocates investment ideas that are right for you
Responsive to your requests for information and explanations
Portfolio has performed well
Portfolio has right amount of volatility for your goals and personality
Portfolio is diversified globally
Portfolio protects against declines in value of dollar
Portfolio manager tracks tax basis and holding periods of all securities and avoids short-term capital-gains taxes
Have good interpersonal chemistry with portfolio manager
Fees and commissions are reasonable
Clear what you’re paying for, how much you’re paying and what your advisor’s other compensation arrangements are
